Maintaining Your CVBC Registration

Registration is renewed annually. The College’s registration year is from January 1 to December 31 and all registrants (except Temporary registrants) must apply to renew their registration for January 1 of the coming year.

Registration Renewal:  For information about the College’s registration renewal process, requirements and deadlines.  

Temporary registration affords a veterinarian who is primarily registered in another jurisdiction the ability to practice in British Columbia for up to 30 days (consecutive or non-consecutive) during the period of the Temporary registration. 

Temporary registration is valid for one year from the date it is granted. Registration dates are not tied to the January – December registration cycle that applies to all other classes of registration. 

It automatically expires at the end of that one-year period of registration (there is no entitlement to registration renewal).    

A Temporary registration may be extended for an additional one-year term upon application from the registrant.  Extension applications must be completed before the current period of Temporary registration has expired. 

Instruction for extending a Temporary Registration is provided in the “Application to Extend Temporary Registration” form.

If no action is taken to extend Temporary registration and the registration expires, the veterinarian would be required to apply again as a new applicant should they wish to receive new registration (Temporary or otherwise) with the College at any time in the future. 

There are a few mechanisms through which an individual’s registration with the College may cease: 

  1. Cancellation for a Failure to Renew Registration – if ANY registration renewal requirement is not completed by the final renewal deadline (the end of the first business day in January), the Registrar must cancel the individual’s registration, effective January 1.  See Registration Renewal for more information.

  2. Cancellation by Resignation – this is the voluntary cancellation of registration initiated by the registrant.  See Changes in Registration for more information about Resignation and to access the applicable Resignation of Registration Form.

  3. Cancellation of provisional registration – 
    Note: Provisional registration may be granted to an applicant by the Registration Committee pending correction of an outstanding requirement for full registration, pursuant to section 2.8 or 2.8(A) of the Registration bylaws.  As part of their decision to grant provisional registration, the Committee may impose limits and conditions on the individual’s registration and practice of veterinary medicine and may set a deadline for correction of the deficiency.     Cancellation of provisional registration may occur if a registrant with provisional registration does not remedy the deficiency in their application for full registration within the time period established by the Committee, or if the registrant fails to follow a limit or condition imposed by the Committee as part of their provisional registration decision. Provisional registrants may submit a request to the Registration Committee for an extension to any deadlines relevant to their provisional registration. 

  4. Cancellation as a Disciplinary Action – cancellation of an individual’s registration is one outcome available to the Discipline Committee following a discipline hearing.

  5. Expiry of Temporary Registration** –Temporary registration automatically expires at the end of its one-year term, unless the individual applies for an extension before the registration expiry date.  A Temporary registration my be extended for an additional one-year term upon application.

  1. If your registration was cancelled forfailing to renew by the final deadline, see Cancellation and Pathways back to Registration for a breakdown of your options based upon circumstances and timing.
  2. If your registration was cancelled by your voluntary resignation and you now wish to return to practice in British Columbia, you will need to proceed through the new application for registration process.  See the Registration Application Guide for instruction.
  3. If you were a provisional registrant and your registration was cancelled because you failed to satisfy the terms and conditions of your provisional registration by the deadline set by the Registration Committee and you now with to return to practice in British Columbia, you will need to proceed through the new application for registration process.  See the Registration Application Guide for instruction.
  4. If your registration was cancelled as an outcome of a discipline hearing, you may be eligible to apply for reinstatement of your registration after a minimum of two years from the date of the cancellation, subject to the requirements of the applicable order.  An application for reinstatement will include submission of an application for registration form, proof of meeting any terms and conditions of the disciplinary order (as applicable) and payment of the reinstatement fee set out in the College’s Prescribed Fees and Assessments bylaw (Schedule C).  You are advised to contact the College regarding your situation and receive instruction for your reinstatement application.
  5. If you held Temporary registration and allowed the registration to expire without taking timely action to apply for an extension, then any future return to practice in British Columbia will require a new application for registration with the College.
