Verifying a Veterinarian's Registration Status

The College of Veterinarians of British Columbia’s Online Registry can be used by the public to find a veterinarian and/or veterinary practice facility by name or location.  The Veterinarian search also includes the ability to locate a board-certified specialist by area of specialty.

The Online Registry is also a resource for the general public to verify a veterinarian’s registration status or practice facility’s accreditation status with the CVBC and to see any limitations imposed a veterinarian’s license or a facility’s services.

Letters of Professional Standing

Letters of professional standing and/or licensure verification are commonly required from other jurisdictions where a veterinarian is applying for new or renewed registration.

To request a letter of professional standing from the CVBC, please submit a completed and signed “Letter of Professional Standing Request Form” to the CVBC office at reception@cvbc.ca

Letter of Professional Standing Request Form

The request form allows for multiple recipients to be named in a single request.  The CVBC will send letters of standing for a registrant to more than one recipient for a single fee so long as the recipients are all named within a single request form.  Requests submitted at separate times will be processed as separate requests and each will be assessed their own fee.

NOTE: Prepayment of the Fee for a Letter of Professional Standing of $52.50 ($50 + GST) must be received by the CVBC before your request will be processed.  You may pay the fee by either:

  • Visa or Mastercard
    • If you are an existing registrant, an invoice will be created upon receipt of your request and will become available for online payment in your Online CVBC Registrant Account
    • If you are a former registrant and you wish to pay by credit card, you may contact the office to arrange to provide your payment information over the phone.
  • Cheque (submitted by mail)

If the jurisdiction that requires the letter has its own form that the CVBC will need to complete, you must include that form with the CVBC request form.

If there is a particular date by which you require the letter to be sent, please indicate that on your request form.  The CVBC will attempt to accommodate the deadline.  Otherwise, please allow for up to 10 working days from the date of submission and fee payment for the CVBC to prepare the letter of professional standing.

Letters of professional standing will be emailed to the target jurisdiction(s) and copied to the registrant.

A letter of professional standing from the CVBC will disclose the following information:

  • Registrant’s full name, date of birth, and any former legal name documented in the CVBC’s register
  • Your date of original registration, current registration class, and any American/European Board of Veterinary Specialists-recognized specialist credentials that have been formally registered with the CVBC;
  • A summary of your registration history including class changes, any limitations or conditions, cancellations or suspensions imposed on your registration
  • Any published* actions taken by the Investigation (IC) or Discipline (DC) committees.

*With the exception of disciplinary actions that are published on the CVBC website (in accordance with the Veterinarians Act and CVBC bylaws), the CVBC is not authorized to disclose any complaints investigation and/or discipline history without a registrant’s direct consent.   The Letter of Professional Standing request form asks the registrant to indicate whether or not they give consent for the CVBC to include this information in the letter.
